We are all saddened to hear of the loss of renowned stunt pilot Greg Poe. On Sunday July, 24 Greg Poe suffered an apparent heart attach near his hometown of Boisie, Idaho. Our condolences go out to his family, team and friends.

Not only will Greg’s performance be missed in the Fargo AirSho, but also his contribution of to local youth in our community. Greg was slated to arrive in Fargo on Aug. 8 and make presentations to local youths about the dangers of drug addiction. Poe had created the “Elevate Your Life” program after losing his son to drug addiction in 2002.

Greg Poe Airshows issued a statement that it intends to continue operations in both the airshow arena and the Ryan J. Poe Foundation, and will be making decisions toward achieving that goal in the near future.

In what promises to be a memorable Heritage Flight, Capt Garrett “Mace” Dover will pilot the mighty F-16 Viper alongside Dan Friedkin in the P-51 Mustang. Heritage Flight formations of vintage aircraft alongside contemporary fighters serve as a living memorial to the men and women of the USAF past and present. With as many as sixty Heritage Flight demonstrations taking place across the US and overseas in any given year, the Heritage Flight Program has supported hundreds of events in its fourteen years, attracting millions of viewers to everything from air shows to funerals, sporting events to parades.

In 2010, the Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation was formed to keep this popular program flying. Today, the core of the Heritage Flight program remains true to its original vision: honor the past, welcome the future, and provide an aerial monument to the achievements of the U.S. Air Force.
PILOT BIOS

DAN FRIEDKIN
Dan Friedkin is a tour de force of flying. His passion for flight began as a kid who loved to build and fly radio controlled airplanes. At 14 he soloed a glider and soon thereafter began flying taildraggers and helicopters. At 18 he got his rating in the Lockheed Jetstar, and was 20 when he soloed the Mustang, which to this day remains his favorite airplane.

Dan has a surface level formation aerobatic card in the T-6, P-51, P-38, F6F, F8F, F4U, Hawker Hurricane, Spitfire, and F-86 Sabre. He is a founding member of The Horsemen flight team, as well as Chairman of the United States Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation where he is one of only 9 civilian pilots qualified to fly formation with USAF single ship demo teams.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown University in Business Administration and a Master’s degree from Rice University. Dan, his wife Debra, and their four children live in Houston, Texas, where he runs a group of automotive businesses, serves on several boards, and is a Commissioner of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

ED SHIPLEY
Ed Shipley’s air show career began with the Six of Diamonds T-6 formation aerobatic team, where he flew right wing and lead. He is a former pilot in the USAF Heritage Flight and founding member of The Horsemen P-51 flight team. Ed was a 747 pilot for Atlas Air and has flown air shows for over 20 years in the T-6, P-51, F4U, F8F, and F-86. He has piloted a Mustang across the Atlantic and flown a F4U Corsair off a nuclear aircraft carrier. Ed was a board member of the International Council of Air Shows and currently is a ICAS Ace evaluator for Warbirds and Jets.
The Blue Angels’ mission is to enhance Navy and Marine Corps recruiting efforts and to represent the naval service to the United States, its elected leadership and foreign nations. The Blue Angels serve as positive role models and goodwill ambassadors for the U. S. Navy and Marine Corps.

A Blue Angels flight demonstration exhibits choreographed refinements of skills possessed by all naval aviators. The Blue Angels’ C-130, affectionately known as Fat Albert, begins each demonstration by exhibiting its maximum performance capabilities during a ten-minute performance. Shortly thereafter, you will see the graceful aerobatic maneuvers of the four-jet Diamond Formation, in concert with the fast-paced, high-performance maneuvers of its two Solo pilots. Finally, the team illustrates the pinnacle of precision flying, performing maneuvers locked as a unit in the renowned, six-jet Delta Formation.

The team is stationed at Forrest Sherman Field, Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, during the show season. However, the squadron spends January through March training pilots and new team members at Naval Air Facility El Centro, California.

The Blue Angels are scheduled to fly 68 air shows at 35 air show sites in the United States during the 2010 season, as the team celebrates our 23rd year of flying the F/A-18 Hornet.

Last season, more than 8 million spectators watched the Blue Angels perform. Since its inception in 1946, the Blue Angels have performed for more than 463 million fans.

An all-Marine Corps crew of three officers and five enlisted personnel operate the Lockheed-Martin C-130T Hercules, affectionately known as Fat Albert Airlines. Fat Albert joined the team in 1970 and flies more than 140,000 miles each season. It carries more than 40 maintenance and support personnel, their gear and enough spare parts and communication equipment to complete a successful air show.

Fat Albert cruises at a speed of more than 320 knots (approximately 360 miles per hour) at 27,000 feet. Four Allison turboprop engines, which produce more than 16,000 shaft-horsepower, provide Fat Albert Airlines with the power to land and depart on runways as short as 2,500 feet.

At select show sites, Fat Albert demonstrates its jet-assisted takeoff (JATO) capability. Eight solid-fuel rocket bottles, four on each side, attached near the rear paratrooper doors thrust the Hercules skyward. Fired simultaneously, the JATO bottles allow the mammoth transport aircraft to takeoff within 1,500 feet, climb at a 45-degree angle, and propel it to an altitude of 1,000 feet in approximately 15 seconds. Getting Fat Albert airborne in minimal time and distance simulates conditions in hostile environments or on short, unprepared runways.

These beautifully restored “War Birds” are currently on display in the Fargo Air Museum. This is a great opportunity to see them take to the skies!

North American P-51D Mustang

Called the “Mustang”, the P-51 is perhaps the best-known fighter of World War II. With its Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the P-51 quickly became the war’s dominant fighter plane. It was though of as a “knight in shining armor” by the many bomber crews it escorted.

After the war, the P-51 remained in US service with the Strategic Air Command until 1949, and with the Air National Guard and Reserves into the 1950s. It became one of the first fighters to see combat in the Korean War. The RAF’s Fighter Command used them until 1946. In addition, over 50 air forces around the world acquired and used the Mustang for many more years, some as recently as the early 1980s. When the US Air Force realigned their aircraft designations in the 1950s, the Mustang became the F-51.

Chance-Vought F4U Corsair

The Corsair was used by the Navy and Marines during World War II and the Korean War. Perhaps it is best known for its inverted gull wing. Its looks made it a star of the 1970s TV series “Baa Baa Black Sheep”. This wonderfully restored aircraft is owned by Gerald Beck of Wahpeton, ND.

Grumman TBM Avenger

The Avenger became the Navy’s primary torpedo bomber aircraft. Its best-known pilot may be former President George Bush. Just over 30 Avengers still remain airworthy.
